Theories Regarding the Origin of the Peñol Stone.

The first theory said it was a meteorite. This theory was discarded until a group of geologists analyzed the peñol stone and realized that its components were very common in the earth.
Another theory says that the Peñol rock is a volcanic eruption, and that it became rock because the eruption had contact with the air.
The third actually ceased to be theories and became a confirmed study. It says that the Piedra del Peñol is literally a stone that is part of the tectonic plate BATOLITO ANTIOQUEÑO.

What Is La Piedra Del Peñol?

The Guatapé Rock or Piedra del Peñol is a monolith (rock of a single element) 220 meters high. In addition, it has a volume of 22,000,000 m3, a perimeter of 770 meters, and is 2137 meters above sea level.

It is composed of quartz, feldspar, granite and mica, among other mineral components. This makes this stone one of the most outstanding and undoubtedly one of the most fascinating in America.

History of Peñón de Guatapé.

The first thing to recognize is that this stone was of natural origin, which means that we are not talking strictly about its formation. But we will talk about different aspects throughout the story.

Since pre-Hispanic times, this stone has played an important role, as it was part of different worship was part of different cults of adoration worships performed by the indigenous people that inhabited this region. These Indians worshiped nature, possibly the stone was a symbol of worship or an object worshiped by them.

In the mid-twentieth century, the Peñol stone was not the most desirable place for the inhabitants of the region, since the region’s economy was based strictly on agriculture, and the stone occupied a space that could not be planted.

The parish priest of the town of Guatapé (Alfonso Montoya) in the middle of mass launched a challenge with the expression “toads do not climb stones”. This caused several men to take this challenge personally and among them were
Ramón Díaz, Pedro Nel Ramírez and the most famous of all Luis Eduardo Villegas. These men climbed this fabulous rock in 5 days, their feat ended on July 16, 1954, and was recorded as one of the most important historical events of the rock.

The feat of Don Luis Villegas inspired the construction of the first stairs, which were made of wood, today there are 740 and of concrete, this facilitated the ascent to the stone and gave greater security. This made it easy to climb this great natural monument.
